HDE Advent Calendar Day 4: 台湾にある日本統治時代の駅 / Stations built in the Taiwan under Japanese rule period

Hello everyone, I am Jo from Taiwan, in charge of the fourth day. I was very wondering what to write, but when I looked back on the photos I took this year on Google Photo, I decided to show you the stations in Taiwan that were built in in the Taiwan under Japanese rule period.

Taiwan was a dependency of the Empire of Japan since the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed. The period lasted from 1895 to 1945. In that period of Taiwan, the Japanese government built a number constructions, successfully modernized Taiwan. In those constructions, the most important ones are traffic infrastructures, which are Taiwan’s railways. Until now, which the war has ended more than 70 years, we can still see those railway stations in our daily lives.

I would like to introduce three stations which I have visited before.

Taichung Station

Taichung is the city in the middle of Taiwan’s developed western area, and this is where Taichung station locates. In the picture, the one you see covered by well-burned bricks is the 1917 built second old station. After the construction of the new station was finished in 2016, the old one was no longer used.
The station was built in Tatsuno style, same as the Tokyo station. Tatsuno style is Japanese architect Kingo Tatsuno’s famous style, and it is showed in the architectures that are designed and constructed with reinforced brick faced with stone. He supervised a number of constructions that were built in Taiwan in the Japanese-ruled period. One famous example that is now still being using is the Presidential Palace in Taiwan.
This second station was certified as historic remains in 1995, and the repair work has been doing since 2005. The modern one you see in the back is the new station.

Hsinchu Station

Hsinchu is the city in the middle of Taichung and Taipei. The station was design by Japanese architect Tsumunaga Matsugasaki when he was working in the Railway Bureau of  Governor-General of Taiwan. It was completed in 1913, and it is the oldest station but it is still working.
This station also somehow has some connection with Tokyo station because the two have been sister stations since 2015.

Baoan Station

    f:id:seisho-jo:20171204011933j:plain

This station is not like the Taichung one or the Hsinchu one which are the stations of the cities, but we can see the history in this special station.
The name Baoan has been used since the KMT government came to Taiwan based on the village’s name. The original name was Sharoken parking lot for trains. It was built when the Railway Bureau of Governor-General of Taiwan decided to open the traffic of the railway between Tainan and Dakugou (now Kaohsiung). It was once transferred because of the Tainan Sharoken Sugar Refinery in the period when Taiwan’s economy was mainly supported by the sugar industry, the station now is the second one.
It is really amazing that I always feel that I am in Japan when I see those Japanese tiles. There are still many constructions which has used Japanese tiles.

This time I shared some station stories in Taiwan, but there are still a lot of architectures that are built in Japanese-ruled period in a very Japanese style. If you have any chances to go to Taiwan, please be sure to visit them!
